Special issue No. 2/2025: In memoriam Daniel Barbu
One year since the passing away of Professor Daniel Barbu, the founder of the journal Studia Politica. Romanian Political Science Review, we would like to pay tribute to his personality and his oeuvre. Therefore, we invite you to submit articles for a special issue highlighting his contributions to the fields of history and art history, philosophy, political science, and political theology, during forty years of scientific activity. In his search for an in-depth understanding of the nature and structure of Romanian society, the typical features of Romanian politics (mainly post-communist), and the most recent (post-democratic) developments in Europe, Daniel Barbu resorted to a particularly complex, multidisciplinary, conceptual and theoretical set of tools. This has allowed him to explore a wide variety of novel thematic fields which ultimately converge extraordinarily, in a subtle overall picture of the society and of the politics of his time.
Among the themes that Professor Daniel Barbu has addressed and on which we would like to reflect together within this special issue, we would like to mention:
-
the cultural legacy of “Byzantium after Byzantium;”
-
the specificities of the modernization-rationalization process in the Romanian territories;
-
communism as a “process of dislocation of a referential universe;”
-
the “absent Republic” and the precarious link between politics and society;
-
the configuration of post-democracy (characterized by the personalization of political will, de-parliamentarization, apoliticism);
-
the (incomplete) separation of Church and State;
-
Orthodoxy as “an instance of production and reproduction of the community bond;”
-
the democratic citizenship in its theological-political dimension; pia libertas as a superior form of liberty in community life (koinōnia).
This list is not exhaustive, of course. We welcome contributions on any of the themes and approaches that Daniel Barbu has (mainly) opened up in the political and social sciences literature.
Deadline for contributions of 6.000 - 8.000 words: 15 April 2025
